5/1: Hayne Hipp and Louanne Runge: Liberty Fellowship

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

May 1, 2018 – What a pleasure to hear from Hayne Hipp, a true trailblazer in our state, seeking to improve the lives of all South Carolinians.  He and his wife Anna Kate founded the Liberty Fellowship in 2004, a statewide initiative working to empower the state’s young leaders to realize their full potential.

The Liberty Fellowship is run in partnership with Wofford College and The Aspen Institute.  Each year 20 Fellows are selected and make a commitment to improving our state.  Nominees must be between the ages of 30 and 45, live in South Carolina, be a leader with a history of community engagement, be willing to make a serious time commitment, have the potential to have an impact at the state level, and be successful in their field.  The selection process is rigorous and seeks diversity of thought and experience.

Diversity is a critical component of the Liberty Fellowship, working to build relationships and eliminate barriers among those from varied backgrounds.  Their goal is both personal transformation and collective impact.

The Fellows participate in five seminars over 18 months, exploring the great thinkers of the world using the Socratic method.  Their explorations are guided with the practical intent to assist the greater community.  Each Fellow conducts a project that will benefit South Carolina, building on the work of other Fellows.  Each Fellow is also provided a Mentor, to guide them along their path.

One example is Fellow Amy Crockett’s project expanding the Centering Pregnancy model of prenatal care to eliminate racial disparities for pre-term birth.  This model is used at MUSC and by Florence Crittenton, and has saved our state over $7 million.

During the May 1 meeting, members also participated in the Lowcountry On the Table community discussions.

The Fellows include many current leaders in our state, including a number of Rotarians, and our own Past President, Jermaine Husser.

Luanne Runge, a Liberty Fellow, is the current President and CEO, and also spoke with the club, sharing more about the innovation and impact these leaders have on our state as a whole.

How can you get involved?  Nominate a Fellow, making sure the nomination is in by July 1, 2018.  Or volunteer to serve as a mentor.  MORE:  http://www.libertyfellowshipsc.org.

NEWS BRIEFS

May 15 and May 22 Luncheon Location Changes

As most of you are aware, as much as we all love meeting at Riley Park, due to our budget constraints we are having to look for a new meeting venue starting July 1. We would like members to experience a couple of different options to see what would best work for our club.

On Tuesday, May 15, our luncheon will be held at 12:30pm at Trident Technical College, Palmer Campus. Our meeting will be in the Culinary Art Institute building in the Palmer Amphitheater. Our own Mike Saboe, Dean of the Culinary Institute of Charleston, will be our keynote speaker.

Parking is available in the lot in front of the building.

The following Tuesday, May 22, we will be meeting at 12:30pm at 5 Faber Place, which is an event venue in the Hall Hospitality Group. There is convenient parking in the adjacent parking garage on Cumberland Street, as well as various other garages within walking distance.

If you have any ideas of meeting venues on the peninsular, please let President David or Carroll know. We are open to your ideas!

Operation Home – Volunteers Needed

You may recall that in our Fall round of RCCF Grants that our club donated $1500 to Operation Home. Our donation was to be used to build an ADA Ramp for a person who would otherwise not be able to afford it. The way Operation Home works is that they get 6-8 volunteers to work alongside their contractor to build each ramp. Our club has the opportunity to assist in constructing the ramp that we donated the funds to help build.

Six to eight Rotarian volunteers are needed to commit to helping out from 9:00AM to 3:00 PM on Friday, May 18th. In the next week, President David will be getting additional information about the location of the house and family we will be helping. This information will be shared with the club. This is going to be a very rewarding experience. Please let President David know if you would like to volunteer.

WELLNESS TIP

Trade Your Flip-Flops for Foot-Friendly Kicks. Each year, as summer approaches, experts warn against those rubbery thongs. While convenient, they’re flimsy, making wearers more susceptible to injuries like stubbed toes, rolled or sprained ankles, tendinitis, blistering, arch pain, and stress fractures. If you have to let your toes out, the American Podiatric Medical Association’s website offers alternative sandals that can give more support.
