April 23, 2024

Thanks to our guest Dr. Brian Cuddy of Roper St Francis Healthcare who gave us a presentation on the history and current state of health care in the Lowcountry. His talk took us back to the formation of one of the earliest medial societies in Colonial America  right here in Charleston, to present day where we benefit from some of the finest health care facilities  in the region.

Don’t forget to sign up a for a “Night at the Museum” for a special view into the African American Museum. See below for more info.

Rotary Educator of the Month – February & March

We are quickly catching up with our recognition of Educators of the Month at Mitchell Elementary this month, recognizing outstanding educators for both February and March.  Jenna Lamb, PE Instructor, is the honoree for February and Mary Beth DiNunzio, Art Teacher, for March.  Coach Lamb always has students lined up correctly for lunch handing out napkins and utensil with a big smile.  Ms. Washington, the cafeteria manager is deeply appreciative.  Coach Lamb builds strong relationships with all the young scholars with still maintaining high expectations for their learning and behavior.  Ms. DiNunzio has brought leadership to student life with beautiful student-created murals.  Ms. DiNunzio is always positive, working hard to support the Mitchell scholars in a variety of ways however she may be needed. Congratulations to these two outstanding educators at Mitchell Elementary!

Supporting Charleston Miracle League

Thank you to Channing Proctor and Community Service Chair/Pres-Elect Nominee Karla Combs who arranged for our Rotarians to be “fans in the stands”, supporting and cheering for the participants at the Charleston Miracle League baseball game last Saturday.

Also, thank you to those who were able to attend — we filled the stands with about 18 people (plus 3 dogs), including our 12 Rotarians plus their family members and friends.

This was truly a wonderful event! Each Rotarian spectator’s heart was filled with emotion and their faces with smiles as we witnessed the joy and smiles of the participants in the games, and all in attendance!

Kickoff Dinner for the Charleston Police Dept. Leadership Development Summit

Thank you to fellow Rotarian and CPD Chief Chito Walker for the invitation to our Rotary Club to be a part of this event, as the CPD begins the next Leadership Development Summit, which provides leadership development training for police officers, attended by members of the CPD as well as officers from other police departments in the tri-county area and around the state

Past President Digit Matheny and President Cleave were privileged to represent our Rotary Club at the event. Our Rotary Club was recognized at this event, recognizing the special relationship of our Club and the CPD on this project, including the financial support from our Club for this program’s creation and ongoing support

Thank you to those in our Club who were instrumental in creating this program and partnership, particularly Past Presidents Digit Matheny and Rob Dewey.

District-Wide March Membership Madness Challenge

Who will be the first club to take on the March Membership Madness challenge? March Madness in basketball is all about shooting 3-Pointers from downtown. In Rotary, it’s all about attracting new members. All clubs who shoot 3-Pointers and grow membership by 3 new members from March 1 through April 30 will be recognized and receive a special award at Spring Training Assembly on May 3. A Grand Prize of $400 will be given in honor of the club who brings in the most new members to the Community Service Organization (501-c-3) of their choice.

Knowing our Club members and our excellent Membership Committee Team, on behalf of our Rotary Club, President Cleave has replied and accepted the District’s challenge.

Our club will be using existing Paul Harris Fellow points to reward current members who bring prospective members to our weekly luncheons and who join our Rotary Club. A current member, who brings a prospective member to a luncheon, will receive 100 Paul Harris Fellow points.  If a current member has one of their prospective members submit an application to the club, they will receive 250 Paul Harris Fellow points. Paul Harris Fellow Points equal one point per dollar and are added to a member’s current Rotary Foundation donation total (i.e. If you have donated $750, 250 points will get you to $1000 or a PHF.)

This promotion will be held from March 19 – May 31, 2024.  We encourage all members to bring a potential member to Rotary over the next two months and let’s make March Membership Madness a Slam Dunk!

Our Club is on Social Media

Members are encouraged to follow all of our social media channels and share posts with their followers too!  We also need members to send us picture of anything they do that relates to Rotary – service projects, meetings, events, etc.  We would love to keep our accounts full of smiling Rotarians! WELLNESS TIP

Meditate

Another stress reducer and mental health booster, meditation gives you a way to tune into the present moment. In our busy, yourself healthy, but also protecting your happiness.

Starting meditation could be as simple as doing a little reading on it and setting a timer for, say, 5 minutes each day. There are also plenty of good apps to guide you. You can even incorporate a meditative mindset into your regular activities, such as mindful eating.
