Print Friendly, PDF & Email

May 8, 2018:  This past Tuesday, our club recognized the Rotary Service Above Self Scholars, Teacher of the Year and Honor Roll Teachers for Charleston County School District. Each Scholar was introduced by one of their teachers who provided some highlights on each student’s dedication to service above self.

Our Service Above Self Scholars are:

AAMANI HAMILTON:  From Burke High School who is a volunteer at SMART Camp as well as helping with the Back to School drive each year.

ANDREW MURPHY:  From First Baptist High School who is a volunteer with Star Gospel Mission, helping the homeless and coordinating the breakfast there for the last 2 years.

WHITNEY MARSHALL:  From Ashley Hall who has been doing charity walks for MS since she was 13, having done 8 events and over 400 miles so far. In 2014 she was the youngest and only person without MS to receive the Most inspirational Walker Award.

Superintendent Dr. Gerrita Postlewait introduced the Honor Roll Teachers and Teacher of the Year. She opened with the importance of keeping education the hallmark of our Country’s greatness and proudly announced the 7 of the 16 students to receive the first round of National Merit Scholarships are from CCSD.

The Teacher of the Year and Honor Roll teachers are:

STEPHANIE HAECHERI – TEACHER OF YR (Whitesides Elementary) MARGARET HALE – RUNNER-UP (James Island Elementary School)
AMANDA PROHASKA – HONOR ROLL (Mt Pleasant Academy)
KEVIN SHORT – HONOR ROLL ( Charleston County School of the Arts)
JOYCE STEWART GIBBS – HONOR ROLL (EB Ellington Elementary)

Congratulations to these amazing Students and Teachers!

NEWS BRIEFS

May 15 and May 22 Luncheon Location Changes

As most of you are aware, as much as we all love meeting at Riley Park, due to our budget constraints we are having to look for a new meeting venue starting July 1. We would like members to experience a couple of different options to see what would best work for our club.

On Tuesday, May 15, our luncheon will be held at 12:30pm at Trident Technical College, Palmer Campus. Our meeting will be in the Culinary Art Institute building in the Palmer Amphitheater. Our own Mike Saboe, Dean of the Culinary Institute of Charleston, will be our keynote speaker.

Parking is available in the lot in front of the building.

The following Tuesday, May 22, we will be meeting at 12:30pm at 5 Faber Place, which is an event venue in the Hall Hospitality Group. There is convenient parking in the adjacent parking garage on Cumberland Street, as well as various other garages within walking distance.

If you have any ideas of meeting venues on the peninsular, please let President David or Carroll know. We are open to your ideas!

Operation Home – Volunteers Needed

You may recall that in our Fall round of RCCF Grants that our club donated $1500 to Operation Home. Our donation was to be used to build an ADA Ramp for a person who would otherwise not be able to afford it. The way Operation Home works is that they get 6-8 volunteers to work alongside their contractor to build each ramp. Our club has the opportunity to assist in constructing the ramp that we donated the funds to help build.

Six to eight Rotarian volunteers are needed to commit to helping out from 9:00AM to 3:00 PM on Friday, May 18th. In the next week, President David will be getting additional information about the location of the house and family we will be helping. This information will be shared with the club. This is going to be a very rewarding experience. Please let President David know if you would like to volunteer.

RCCF Grant to Association of the Blind & Visually Impaired

Members of the RCCF Advisory Committee visited the Association of the Blind and Visually Impaired (ABVI) this past week to present a grant check. Our club’s donation will be used to purchase Tel-A-Ride tickets for blind and visually impaired clients who participate in the Own Your Life program. These tickets will help their clients get to and from ABVI so they can participate in these classes to learn independent living skills and/or skills they need to get a job. Our club is pleased to support ABVI in their efforts to help those blind and visually impaired in our community.

Program Committee to meet on June 5th

The next Program Committee meeting will be on Tuesday, June 5th after our lunch. We will meet for 30 min. All current committee members, and anyone who wants to be a part, are welcome to attend.

WELLNESS TIP

Give Your Diet a Berry Boost – If you do one thing this summer to improve your diet, have a cup of mixed fresh berries — blackberries, blueberries, or strawberries — every day. They’ll help you load up on antioxidants, which may help prevent damage to tissues and reduce the risks of age-related illnesses. Blueberries and blackberries are especially antioxidant-rich.
A big bonus: Berries are also tops in fiber, which helps keep cholesterol low and may even help prevent some cancers.
