1/30: John Tecklenburg: Reflections on Mayor of Charleston

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

January 30, 2024

A special presentation from two time Mayor of Charleston and our own past president Rotarian John Tecklenburg. John reflected on his accomplishments and experiences in working out of City Hall, not far from where he grew up on Broad Street, and all the great memories and friendships that came long with his role. He highlighted progress achieved in areas such racial relations, flooding and infrastructure, as well as the memories of his deep friendship with the departed and beloved  Chief of Police Luther Reynolds.

Volunteer to help staff polling places on Election Days – upcoming  Republican Primary election (Feb. 24)

Historic Rotary Club of Charleston has adopted the polling location at Memminger Elementary School for the Republican Primary (February 24, 2024). Please sign-up to join us for a shift on one or both days HERE.

We have broken down the 14-hour day into two 7-hour shifts, so a total of 24 Rotarians are needed.

With $200 per full-time equivalent, this will result in $2,400 for our RCCF. If you can devote a full day or can volunteer for a shift on both dates, please sign up for each shift individually. Significant others are encouraged to also sign up.

The Election board requires all  volunteers (even those that participated in the program last November) to go through election poll manager training either online or in person. .  More details to follow for all confirmed volunteer poll workers on how to access your online training at your convenience prior to February 1.

Feb 3 – Happy Anniversary Rotary Club of Charleston

A quick historical note! Feb. 3 is the 104th “birthday” of our Historic Rotary Club of Charleston!

Here are excerpts from the book “Service Above Self — 100 Years of the Rotary Club of Charleston”, which was published for our Club’s 100th anniversary in 2020:

“The 1st meeting of the Rotary Club of Charleston was held on Feb. 3, 1920, following a dinner at the St. John’s Hotel. The Club received its charter a few weeks later on Mar. 1, making it the 9th Club formed in S.C. and the 624th Rotary Club to be organized. There were 22 charter members, with the effort to form the club spearheaded by T. Wilbur “Buddy” Thornhill and Louis C. Fischer.”

“Members were busy with community service in their first year. Two of the biggest projects involved institutions that are alive today in Charleston – the Francis Marion Hotel and committing to establish Charleston’s Boy Scout Council. Club members sold $50,000 worth of stock in the Francis Marion Hotel to get it started.”

Please note that the Francis Marion Hotel is celebrating its 100thanniversary this month.
