May 14, 2019:  The Historic Rotary Club of Charleston celebrated students and teachers on May 14, 2019 by awarding 4 high school “Service Above Self” Scholarships and celebrating the Top 5 Honor Roll Teachers including the Charleston Teacher of the Year.

Rotary Service Above Self Scholarships were awarded to the following students:

Ke’von Singleton

Introduced by First Baptist Guidance Counselor, Sherri Bridges, Ke’von Singleton spoke about his love of giving back to his community.  He described how his interest in documentary film and the creation of “Atlanta, a City You Love to Hate” led him to realize his voice needed to be heard.  After his film won several honors and was shown at the National African American History Museum, he went on to participate in the Charleston Republican Students for Action committee, volunteering at the Gibbs and YMCA Summer Camp for Black Artists and other local groups.  He will be attending Moorehouse College.

Catherine Dixon

Ashley Hall Guidance Counselor, Amanda Murrell, introduced Catherine Dixon, who will be attending USC Honors College.  Ms. Dixon told our club about how at 6 years old she realized she didn’t want gifts and asked her mom if she could raise money for Boys Farm, a home for disadvantaged boys.  Since 2007 she has been raising money for Boys Farm and estimates she has help raise over $10,000 for the program.  She volunteers at school in numerous ways including the annual Bake Sale and at her church.

Halle Kilburn

Porter Gaud Guidance Counselor, Gretchen Tate, introduced Halle Kilburn, who volunteers and numerous Porter Gaud programs.  She will be attending Tennessee this fall.  Haley said she believes service to others is the most important extracurricular activity she is involved in.  She is a service leader for the school’s blood drive, helps at Ronald McDonald House, Pet Helpers, Habitat for Humanity, Bishop Gadsden, and Bouquets for Vets.

Larry Singletary

Burke High Principal Cheryl Swinton introduced Larry Singletary, who will be attending the Citadel.  He volunteers for disabled veterans, participates in ROTC , is a youth altar person at his church.  Mr. Singletary said that since elementary school he has always tried to help others.

Charleston County School District Superintendent Dr. Gerrita Postlewait and Chief of Staff Erica Taylor introduced the 5 finalists for CCSD Teacher of the Year.  The recipients are:

  1. Erin Bua has taught for 27 years and is a teacher at James B. Edwards Elementary School.
  2. James Costner has taught math for 5 years at Laing Middle School.
  3. Shantia Wilder has taught for 19 years at Chicora Elementary School
  4. Melissa Reese is this year’s Teacher of the Year Runner Up.  She has taught for 7 years at Murray- Lasaine Elementary
  5. Teacher of the Year, Jayuntay Williams, teaches at West Ashley Middle School.
    Jayuntay Williams

Williams gave a short speech about his love for teaching and that he strives to lead in all that he does.  He searches for ways to engage students by dancing, singing, teaching, etc.  His goal is to bridge the gap between home and school and strives to get his students parents involved in their scholastic activities.

Volunteer Service Opportunity with Salvation Army

We are looking for volunteers to help The Salvation Army of Charleston with the Moose Tracks Ice Cream 10,000 Scoop Challenge, coming to Charleston on Tuesday, May 21 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Palmetto Parking Lot on the corner of Market St. and Church St. downtown.

The 10,000 Scoop Challenge is a fun, community event put on by Moose Tracks, the developers of the legendary Moose Tracks Ice Cream flavor line. During a 4-hour window, Moose Tracks challenges the Charleston community to eat FREE Moose Tracks Ice Cream for a cause. For each scoop of ice cream served, Moose Tracks will donate $1 to The Salvation Army of Charleston in hopes of raising $10,000 in just four hours to help fund ongoing community projects. That’s a ton of ice cream!

It’s a fun, outdoor event and we need your help! Volunteers will be scooping ice cream, handing scoopers ice cream cones/napkins, dispersing flyers, handing out moose hats, and ensuring event-goers are having FUN! We are also looking for a volunteer to help by being the Moose mascot for the day!
