4/30: Scott Watson: Piccolo Spoleto 2019

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

April 30, 2019:  We were pleased to have Scott Watson, Director of Cultural Affairs, City of Charleston as our keynote speaker.  Watson previously worked as the marketing director at Gluckman Mayner Architects in New York, and before that he held positions at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, the New York Theater Workshop, and the Dublin Fringe Festival.

Mr. Watson was excited to share about the new Cannon Street Arts Center at 134 Cannon Street – created with support from our own Past President Patterson Smith.  The historical Zion-Olivet Presbyterian Church has been renovated into an Arts Center, and will feature numerous Piccolo events.

Scott Watson

The office of Cultural Affairs seeks to animate Charleston, with a focus on inclusion and accessibility.  They seek to broaden opportunities, and therefore Piccolo this year will have events in West Ashley, James Island, Johns Island, and Daniel Island.

Mr. Watson is proud that Piccolo events are high quality, and can draw those who travel here for Spoleto.  He also notes that Piccolo is produced with a very limited budget.  This year there are 500 events spanning 17 days.

There are a number of free events, which he views as gifts to the community.  Mr. Watson notes the power of the arts to bring people together.

The Charleston Stage Company has developed a 130 person performance space in West Ashley, which also have two rehearsal spaces.   He notes the Sottile renovations will be completed in 2020.

Mr. Watson shared that all members of the community have a pathway into the festival.  This festival represents the best of Charleston and the Lowcountry.  He is excited about the festival and about other artistic opportunities throughout the year.

Mr. Watson noted that next year is the 300th anniversary of the Charles Towne Landing Settlement, and there will be major programs and community events in recognition.

Attendees were provided the current Piccolo brochure.

On Tuesday, we will hear more about our 100 year celebration and also have an opportunity for fellowship as table discussions will take place to hear your thoughts and ideas about your membership and what can be done to make your Rotary experience more beneficial to you. WELLNESS TIP

Try Something New

Springtime is a time for renewal. To get into the mood of change and forward momentum, try a new sport or an old one you haven’t done for a long time. Often, when we engage in new activities, it’s especially motivating. The more types of activities you engage in, the more energetic you’ll feel.
