To combat suburban sprawl, and all the problems that it brings, Josh talked about the need for more urban density and multi-family dwellings – the Missing Middle – while still maintaining the character of downtown Charleston.

On World Polio Day we heard two personal stories about how polio has impacted peoples’ lives: One from Rotarian James Dusenberry who had an aunt stricken with polio, but went on to do great things in her life as a mathematician. And one from the step dad of Rotarian Karla Combes who was was diagnosed with polio as young child and lived a life of service and leadership as an educator. Thanks to both for sharing their stories on this day when we recognize the great contribution Rotary has been to eradicating this disease worldwide.

We hosted a lively forum with the candidates for the Mayor of Charleston which will be decided in the upcoming election. Thanks to all the candidates who offered their views on the most pressing issue our city faces, and thanks to David Burt for his excellent moderating skills!

Howard Knapp, who is head of all elections in South Carolina, gave is and informative talk on his job of overseeing the democratic process in our state. Great insights into how the Palmetto State ensure fair and accurate elections.
