3/12: Lt. General (Ret.) Colby Broadwater: American College of Building Arts

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

March 12, 2019:  Our club was treated to a visit and tour of the American College of the Building Arts.

Founded in the aftermath of hurricane Hugo, the ACBA started in 1999 as a series of workshops and classes in different locations to respond to the lack of artisans made apparent by the rebuilding after Hugo. In 2004, ACBA was licensed by the South Carolina Commission on Higher Education to recruit students for a Bachelor of Applied Science and an Associate of Applied Science in the building arts. In 2009 the College hired Lt. Gen. (Ret.) Colby M. Broadwater III as President of the College. Lt. Gen Broadwater gave us the overview of the program.

The college offers degrees in Architectural Carpentry, Architectural Stone, Classical Architecture, Forged Architectural Ironwork, plastering, Masonry and timber framings. They have an 8:1 student teacher ratio due to the type of curriculum and 75 students currently enrolled. The Class of 2022 has 37 students from ages 18-43 and includes 10 veterans and 3 women.

American College of Building Arts

Students of the ACBA are often sought after due to the unique program and have worked at Mount Vernon, Mount Pelier, the US Capitol, and various locations in Europe.

The College was located at the Old Charleston District Jail for 17 years. In 2016, the College moved into a state-of-the-art facility at the renovated Charleston Trolley Barn on upper Meeting Street.

“Women in Rotary”

Rotarians need to be on the lookout for the next issue of Skirt magazine. The incredible women of our Rotary club will be featured in a profile of the “Women at Work” section.  A fun evening and pampering session was enjoyed by all the women of our club this past Tuesday’s at McKees where photos were taken and Rotary fellowship was enjoyed over drinks and hors d’oeuvres. What a wonderful opportunity for Rotary and our Rotary club to have some of its members spotlighted in this publication.

Rotary Assists The Salvation Army

As many of you may remember, our Rotary Club through the RCCF supported The Salvation Army of Charleston during the grant process this past Fall.  Our club made a donation, which would be used to purchase a freezer and refrigerator to help them qualify for the USDA Emergency Food Assistance Program.  The Salvation Army was able to take advantage of a sale and actually purchased two refrigerators and a freezer!  The first shipment of food was received last Friday and they were able to get the freezer and refrigerators fully stocked!

This is a great way your contributions to the Rotary Club of Charleston Fund (RCCF) is helping others in our community!
