2/26: Mark Sloan: Southbound Project

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

February 26, 2019:  Our speaker this week was Mark Sloan, the College of Charleston’s Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art executive director since 1994.  He came to speak to us about an exhibit he help curate called “Southbound”.  He has curated over 200 exhibitions and authored 23 books ranging from Russian contemporary art to circus life.

Mark Sloan

The special project at Halsey he has curated entitled “Southbound” includes several different aspects including photographs, audio projects, website, and other media.  The main driver of the exhibit is photographs of the new south.  As Mark explained, we all have different definitions of “the south” and the exhibit’s goal was to present a broad definition. Mark, along with co-curator, political scientist at CofC Dr. Mark Long (political geographer) spent over 4 1/2 years on the exhibit after receiving a grant from National Endowment for the Arts.  Mark Long’s interests include geographical boundaries (Ireland, Israel, Berlin Wall, etc.).  The South is contentious and they were interested in exploring who gets to determine what it means to be “the south”.

The exhibit contains a broad cross sectional view of the south since the year 2000.  Photographers with deep connection to the south were invited to submit. They used the internet and surveyed museum colleagues to nominate artists, curators, etc.  After the initial pool was submitted they narrowed the list down to 75 artists. They then visited lots of places and interviewed the photographers.  After deciding on the artists they worked with them to select 10 images to represent their work. Portions of the exhibit are at the Halsey Gallery and The City Gallery.  The exhibits are free, but they close this Saturday at 4pm.  The exhibit will then travel and the tour schedule is posted on the Halsey’s website.  After leaving Charleston it goes to the Triangle area in NC (Duke & NC State), Hunter museum in Chattanooga, Mississippi, Baton Rouge, etc.

Mark showed us examples of the art displayed in the exhibit. The exhibit website includes standalone description of each artist.  During the presentation he showed photos of some of the work:

  • Mitch Epstein:  Photos of debris after hurricanes, chemical plants, etc.
  • Daniel Beltra:  Photos of oil spill. Images highlighting both the beautiful and terrible nature of the destruction.

Artists don’t have to live in the south and they exhibit includes an artist from Honk Kong whose work is interested in commodification of nature.  Examples were images of Sea World’s exploitation of killer whales and Ringling Brothers Circus elephants.

They have produced a catalog and commissioned 15 videos by John David Reynolds which can all be found on the exhibit’s website.  They also commissioned a 2 hour sound track which is a musical equivalent to the art in the gallery. The exhibit also commissioned a GIS mapping service which can be used to “define” aspects of the South.  They looked up businesses with “southern” of “Dixie” in the title, location of “the chicken belt”, where churches are located across the country, etc.  All of these are mapped on the website.

Mark stated they are trying to expand awareness to the community and want to expand their programming.  Memberships to the gallery are available and their website is constantly updated.

Farewell to Rotarian Fred Sales

Fred Sales

We honored and gave a sad farewell to a long-time member and good friend to all, Fred Sales, this past Tuesday.  Fred and his wife, Ann, are moving to Florida this week to be closer to family. Fred has been an active and dedicated member of our Rotary club for 15 years.  He joined in 2004 and was sponsored by Past President Sue Sommer-Kresse.  Seeing the need for a Historian, Fred quickly jumped in to serve our club by volunteering to take photos at meetings and events. He did this for many years while also being an active committee member of the Keyway committee. Past President Alissa recognized Fred’s dedication and service to our club and community by honoring him with his next Paul Harris Fellow.

WELLNESS TIP

Try to Keep a Regular Sleep Schedule

Our sleep-wake cycle is regulated by the hormone melatonin, which is released in response to light. Exposing yourself to too much light at night – such as that emitted from computer screens, TV screens or electronic devices – inhibits the release of melatonin which decreases sleep quality and quantity. This makes us feel sluggish and tired the next day.

Get up and go to bed at the same time of day regardless of the season. Restrict computer use and TV watching at night. Have a bright blue light for use at home in the morning (blue light switches off melatonin release), and only using dull light sources at night. A melatonin supplement may also help you sleep.
