Print Friendly, PDF & Email

December 11, 2018:  Our annual Holiday Luncheon was held at our weekly meeting venue — Hall’s Signature Events. This holiday tradition is always a popular event and this year was no exception! Rotarians and their guests packed the house enjoying fellowship and a fabulous lunch.  This year we all had a special surprise …. Santa made a guest appearance as our greeter! It was a fun, festive event that got everyone in the Holiday spirit!  President Alex recognized Executive Secretary, Carroll Schweers, for her service to our club and presented her with a gift from the club …. a beautiful Clemson stained glass made by our own, Rob Dewey! A special thanks to Bill Hall and the staff at Hall’s Signature Events for making this such a special event for our members.

Holiday Parade of Boats

Santa called his crew off the water Saturday night, but that didn’t stop him and Mrs. Claus from making a special appearance at our club’s annual Holiday Parade of Boats Viewing Party! We thank the wonderful crowd of merry-makers who braved the wet, cold night to attend our annual holiday party. A fun, festive time was had by all in attendance! There was delicious food from Swig & Swine, live entertainment, and a special visit from Santa.  The evening wrapped up with the all anticipated drawing of the SeaFox Boat! Congratulations to our winner Melissa Capps, who is HR Director at Wild Dunes.  Melissa decided over the holidays to take the cash prize of $15,000!  The check was presented to her on Dec. 20th at Wild Dunes Resort by President Alex, President-Elect Sandy Morckel, Past President Digit Matheny (who sold the winning ticket) and PR Chair Rob Byko.

Our other raffle prize winners were:

A big thanks to all Rotarians who supported our event!  We couldn’t have had a successful event without everyone doing their part!!

 Holiday Senior Giving

A BIG thank you to Past President Mark Smith and all those members who volunteered as working “elves” throughout our senior giving project.  We had a great show of elves who shopped, wrapped and handed out gifts at the party on December 12th.  Our club should be proud — we once again were able to spread a little holiday cheer to the 81 seniors at the Ansonborough House.

Ringing Bell for Salvation Army

Unfortunately, more rain fell the week before Christmas and our annual “Ringing of the Bell” for Salvation Army was cancelled.  We have a long history of “Ringing the Bell” and look forward to supporting the Salvation Army with its Red Kettle Campaign next year!

Operation Warm

Christmas came early to the students at James Simons Elementary and Mitchell Elementary!

Our Rotary Club is associated with a national program called Operation Warm.  This is a terrific program which buys thousands of brand new, high quality—and beautiful!—winter coats and sells them at discounted prices to charitable organizations like ours throughout the country to give to children in need.

Our Rotary Club has been participating in Operation Warm for the past 6 years.  The past two years we have partnered with two downtown schools — James Simons Elementary and Mitchell Elementary.

Our club through the RCCF purchased winter coats in a variety of colors and sizes for students at both schools and were able to treat the students to a fun, festive, “shopping” experience before the holiday break.  Rotarian volunteers assisted each student with picking out the coat of his/her choice, as well as socks, which were donated by The Ackerman Foundation.  All the students left with a coat they love! A big thanks to Cheryl Kaynard for her continuous support and help in coordinating this fabulous service project for our club and to head elves, Trey Lucy and David Burt, for overseeing the coat distribution.

International Committee to Meet

The International Committee will meeting on January 8th right after our luncheon.  We are looking for anyone who would like to participate in the evaluation and selection of our budgeted funds to international service projects around the globe.  Please join us if you can or reach out to karl.riner@ubs.com, committee chair.

January Dues Statements

January-July dues statements were emailed to all members prior to the holidays.  Prompt payment is appreciated.  If you did not receive your statement or it got misplaced during the holidays, please let Carroll know and she’ll gladly resend it to you.  Please note that statements are now emailed and no longer mailed or distributed at meetings.

  • Something Unique About Yourself: I was an extra in the Spoleto Festival, USA, The Saint of Bleecker Street opera by Gian Carlo Menotti.  My cast reference was an elderly Italian woman and in one scene I was involved in an altercation resulting in me landing against a chain-link fence while screaming loudly.  Except for the wig and heavy stage make-up requirement, it was fascinating and fun to observe from behind the stage and to meet the interesting people involved in the production.  The opera first opened in 1954 and it was voted best musical by the Drama Critics Circle and awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Music that year.

WELLNESS TIP

Don’t focus on dieting. Focus on eating.

If you’re hungry, you’re more likely to overeat, especially in the evening. Instead, of sacrificing all day and gorging later, it’s better to eat enough during the day to avoid hunger pangs and uncontrolled eating at night. Eat every four hours or so, and make sure to eat a “second lunch” — think of it as another meal rather than a snack — in the mid-afternoon to keep your energy up and make you less hungry in the evening.
