AUG. 5, 2012 — Colby Broadwater III spoke to us about the American College of the Building Arts. LTG Colby Broadway retired in 2006 from the US Army as a Lieutenant General after 33 years of service to our country. He graduated from The Citadel in 1972. In addition to leading  the College of The Building Arts, he also serves on the Save the Light advisory board. His wife, Jane Broadwater, is the chair of the Footlight Players board of Directors.

LTG Colby Broadway updated us with some of the many accomplishments  of the College of the Building Arts. Some examples of these are the two Iron panels at the Citadel in honor of the Class of 1962. Window replacements at Lincoln Cathedral. The third floor ceiling at Drayton Hall has been documented and molds of the plasterwork has been made by  students. Also students have been doing exhibit work for Fort Dorchester State Park.

In addition to the hands on work that students are involved in, they  attend classes and receive a degree that is similar to a preservation degree but with field experience. The college also has a 5000 book collection library, which the public has access to. The college is in the process of buying the Old Charleston Trolley Barn. Work will start in the fall with the College moving its campus there by the end of next year.  The school also is in the process of going thru the accreditation process. They are four years in the middle of this process but expect it to take several more year to complete. One of the most important part of the process is the ability for the school to set up an endowment which they are working on now.
