Club members treated to multicultural program
Music, symbolism abounded at holiday meeting

DEC. 16, 2003 — Club members were treated to a multi-cultural holiday program on December 16, beginning with the lighting of the Chanukah Menorah by Maida Libkin and her daughter, Johanna Schlitt, in celebration of Chanukah, an annual Jewish festival of lights which celebrates the victory of a courageous few over oppressive forces 2,200 years ago.

Next the African-American and Pan-American holiday was commemorated by the lighting of the Kwanzaa Kinnari by Daquan Karnickey and Ashley Smalls, while Ta'Nisha Holmes described the origins and symbolism of the Kwanzaa celebration, which is a cultural holiday that has its origins in the first harvest celebrations of Africa.

Finally, Club members were treated with selections from The Good Time Variety Hour Family Holiday Special Sampler performed by The Company, featuring Bill Schlitt, Maida Libkin, Robert Ivey, Joy Vandervoort-Cobb and Johanna Schlitt. First, members of The Company sang Jingle Bells with audience participation. Next, Robert Ivey sang "Chestnuts Roasting by the Open Fire" followed by Joy Vandervoort-Cobb who sang "Christmas is Almost Here." Johanna Schlitt and her father then sang "It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas," followed by a duet about Sisters and dancing by Ms. Vandervoort-Cobb and Ms. Schlitt. Robert Ivey and Bill Schlitt then performed an hilarious tongue-in-cheek spoof of the same song. Finally, Bill Schlitt performed a solo "Just in Time for Christmas" ending the holiday program. Of course, no holiday program would be the same without Santa Claus who handed out door prizes at the end. -- Lisa Thomas
