Zucker sworn in as new club president
Outgoing president Grinalds highlights club's good deeds

JUNE 24, 2003 - "The King is almost dead, long live the Queen!" quipped President John Grinalds as he prepared to step down as Club President. In his valedictory speech, he expressed his heartfelt thanks for the members for an "exciting, interesting year." Through Rotary and our club, he continued, we all have an outlet to serve out fellow man in this community and around the world. "There is not better time than now to be a Rotarian - living out the 4-way Test in our actions and our relationships."

In the past year, Grinalds noted the club had been awarded the President and Governor's citations, the Keyway was named "Best in the District," and most importantly, Carroll Schweers was named "Secretary of the Year." Finally, we dedicated the Rotary Fountain in Marion Square, capping a multi-year effort.

He said members donated $10,500 to the Rotary International Foundation, $4,700 to the CART Fund for Alzheimer's research, $8,500 to the Charleston Rotary Foundation, and $6,600 from the Polo for Polio event for the PolioPlus campaign and the Charleston Symphony. New projects included sending packages to our troops in Afghanistan and participating in the Trident United Way's Day of Caring.

Anita Zucker, newly sworn in as President for 2003-2004, thanked Grinalds for running the club with efficiency and a sense of humor. She presented him with the gift that made him a Paul Harris Fellow. She also gave him the past-president's pin and a plaque.
The coming year will be exciting, she said, as we approach Rotary's centennial in 2005. She said club members would learn more about Rotary both locally and nationally by sharing "Rotary Moments." She added we would strive to increase membership, continue support for PolioPlus and develop leaders.

The club also soon will unveil a matching gift program to help support the Rotary Foundation. RI President Jonathon Majiyagbe has asked all clubs to create a "Family of Rotary" committee to recognize that the Rotary family includes spouses and extended family members. Anita has asked President-elect Mark Smith to head this initiative.
