4/16: Social – Charleston Riverdogs

April 16, 2019:  Let’s play ball!  Our Spring Social was a family event held at Riley Park.  Our Charleston Riverdogs took on our rivals from the upstate, The Greenville Drive and lost in a close game 3-4. Rotarian baseball fans and their guests enjoyed a pre-game cookout held under the picnic area at Doby’s Deck along the third base line. Our group was treated to an “All-American” menu of hotdogs, hamburgers, and Brats. The weather was perfect … a wonderful evening to spend at The Joe cheering on our Charleston Riverdogs.  Thank you to Dave Echols and his staff for hosting us!! 4/2: Dr. Dondi Costin: Charleston Southern University

April 2, 1029:  Dondi Kostin, President of Charleston Southern University, gave a great presentation covering his background and his vision for the future at CSU. He started with an explanation of his interesting name and a hilarious run down of some great southern naming in his family: Jesse, Lessie, Bessie, and Enos were just a few! Dondi came to CSU from the US Air Force where he most recently served as Chief of Chaplains based at the Pentagon. This was his last post in a 32-year career beginning at the Air Force Academy. Dondi loved the mission of the Air Force. When he and his wife were considering their next step in life, they prayed that God would provide them the same opportunity to serve a mission outside of the Air Force as they had within. But has been working with the department since he was announced as chief in March of 2018. He came to Charleston from Durham, NC where he served as chief and other roles for 15 years. Dan said he hopes he can serve the city for 10 years and achieve the goal of making Charleston a safer place to live, work, and visit. He said one of the unique aspects of his job, is that the primary goal is trying to reduce the need for firefighting. We need to look beyond the paradigm of responding to fires and look at prevention. Continue reading “3/19: Chief Dan Curia: Charleston Fire Department”
