6/4: John Read: Cradle to Career Collaborative

June 4, 2019:  John Read, CEO of the Tri-County Cradle to Career Collaborative (TCCC) presented our club with a 5-year progress report on TCCC. TCCC is comprised of 3 Counties, (Charleston, Dorchester, Berkeley), 4 School Districts and over 100,000 students in spaces within the system, (K-12) or system less spaces (0-5yrs old). In short, he indicated that very little progress has been made in improving the educational system as aligning all of the different parties involved has proved difficult. He did say the educational system is, in fact, doing exactly what it was designed to do: educate white children during the year who are then released to work in the fields in June. The systemic racism in the education system is preventing countless children, through no fault of their own, from reaching their full potential. 5/7: Club Assembly

May 7, 2019:  This week’s meeting was a Club Assembly where President-Elect Sandy Morckel gave us a preview of the upcoming Rotary year and a very special year it is as The Historic Rotary Club of Charleston turns 100 years old in 2020! Sandy started off with a number of significant dates that coincide with our club’s 100th. These special dates include February 3, 1920, which was the date of first our club’s first meeting as well as March 1, 1920, Rotary International’s Charter Date. This coming year, however, is a really big year for Charleston. In addition to our club’s anniversary, it is also Charleston 350th anniversary and the College of Charleston’s 250th anniversary. This Historic Rotary Club of Charleston has also played a catalytic role in our City’s history, helping to launch, among other initiatives, the Coastal Community Foundation, Trident United Way, Boy Scouts, and Crisis Chaplaincy.
